Notes:
This
is by no means an attempt to list every book or magazine that has carried an
article on Tri-ang. There have been far too may of these to list here, but maybe
one day the task of attempting to list them will be undertaken. This list is of
books, magazines and newsletters that are on a predominantly Tri-ang Theme, or
have featured a large amount of Tri-ang in their content.
Pleas let me have your comments and corrections and additions to James Day PO Box 20340, London NW11 6ZE Tel/Fax: (020) 8209 1589 E-mail: jamesday@btinternet.com
Note 1/ - Tri-ang Magazine October 1964 to July 1965
Not really in the same league as Meccano Magazine for ‘Hands On’ type articles, but stuffed full of adverts for Tri-ang products.
Note 2/ - Meccano Magazine (June 1965 to July 1967):
Published
from 1916 until 1981 with a short break from August to December 1967
(Inclusive). The magazine had carried adverts for Tri-ang products since before
the war, but during the above period it carried quite comprehensive articles on
Tri-ang/Hornby, Scalextric, and occasionally Model Land and Minic. After
publication was re-started by Model Aeronautical Press (MAP) in January 1968 the
odd Tri-ang article appeared, but the focus was now as a mainstream hobbies
title with Meccano, so these were few and far between.
Not exactly a model book, but it contains 9 articles and write ups on Tri-ang products, including Scalextric, Minic Motorways, Frog Model Aircraft , Spot-On, Meccano and Tri-ang Hornby. It has some marvellous illustrations!
Note 4/ - Tri-ang Collectors’ Club, later Tri-ang
Hornby Collectors’ Club? (1974 to 1976?):
Between November 1974 and Early 1976? John Shimwell produced a series of lists that were the valiant first attempt at getting a listing of Tri-ang products off the ground. A lot of progress was made and Pat Hammond credits this work as the basis for his own classification system.
First published by Train Collectors Society founder member Peter Gomm in June 1979, there have been articles on the Tri-ang family of railway related products in almost every issue since then.
Note 6/ - Frank Thompson's Price Guide (1984):
On the face
of it this seems to be a very attractive book with a nice colour picture of
Polly on the cover. Once you start delving into the pages it quickly becomes
apparent that everything that appears in the catalogue is listed, given an
availability rating and a price - Whether it was actually made or not! This
rather spoils it.
Even closer
examination will show things listed that are not supported by any evidence
whatsoever. For example the entries for the Minic Motorways Morris Minor, Mobile
Bank, Securicor Van and several other items, are even news to the development
staff from the Minic factory!
Frank manages to quote Catalogue Numbers, dates these items were supposedly available and even prices. Whilst I am sure this book was published in good faith, where this information came from is anyone's guess. I therefore suggest that any information in this book be treated with deep suspicion unless it can be confirmed from another source.
This interesting booklet contains some reminiscences of life at the Lines Brothers Tri- ang Factory as well as the factories of Pascalls, Pains, Mullards, Deans and other firms that were local to the area.
Note
8/ -m Ramsay's British Model Trains Catalogue 2nd Edition (2000):
This contains a complete listing of Tri-ang, Tri-ang/Hornby & Hornby Railways locos 1951-2000 plus a history of Rovex. A third edition is in preparation for publication in 2002.

Preparation for publication at some future date:
