Jinties
items and copy courtest George Thomas

This is an interesting item from my collection.
It is the red Australian Jinty. It is often to referred to as the Maroon Jinty but this is wrong. Moldex in Australia were trying to mimic the Russet Red of the New South Wales Government Railways (NWSGR) at the time.
They also produced the Gondala in Russet Red, as well as the NSWGR EMU. The colours varied so I have included photos to show the colour differences. The Red Rattlers are much browner. I have traveled on the preserved Red Rattler and can confirm it is much redder, closer to the Jinty.

We do not know a lot about the Red Jinty. I believe it was only used in one special set - the R1G/2.  This had three wagons and a brake van.
It did not appear in any catalogues or price lists of the time. I suspect it was a special set made for one customer - like Myers.
Production numbers at Moldex were low typically 200-300 so it would account for why these Jintys are "uncommon".
Note the Headlight. Also the lack of buffers. All the red Jintys I have seen are lacking buffers. Presumably a cost saving exercise as NSWGR locos had buffers. I have seen these with transfers, but more without. This one never had any. Seems crazy to go to all the trouble of making it look Australian and then put BR logos on it !

I have a confession to make. I love Jinties. Must be why I acquired another six yesterday ! A bit of train trading with another collector.
Four Australian and two early English.
Here are the Ozzie ones. Three with small dish headlights and one with the barrel type. I think the barrel type was only on the earlier ones but could be wrong.
Note that only one has see through wheels.

Here are the two English made ones that came in the same pickup
The boxed one is dated 02/03/1954. In the early Richmond box with top flap. Note the body has the gap under the boiler that shows the weight.
The last two pictures are the other Jinty. Slightly later circa 1955. It has the body panel filled in.

A nice couple of additions to my Jinty Collection
